May 30th March and Rally for Oscar López Rivera's Freedom
On Saturday, May 30, 2015 thousands held a march and rally to call for the freedom of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera. A nationalist and activist fighting against the colonization of Puerto Rico by the United States, López Rivera, despite never being charged or convicted of a violent crime, has served 33 years of a 75 year sentence for "seditious conspiracy," opposing by force the authority of the United States over Puerto Rico. "He was accused of being a member of the FALN, the Armed Forces of National Liberation, which claimed responsibility for more than 100 bombings to call attention to the colonial case of Puerto Rico." Twelve of his thirty-three years have been spent in solitary confinement. Cries have come from around the world for his release. It is now up to President Obama to determine the fate of Oscar López Rivera. We implore President Obama to free him with a presidential pardon.
